Creative and Play Based Counselling

Creative and Play Based Therapy is a form of counselling that does not rely on the verbal discussion of thought, feelings, and experiences. Creative and Play Based Therapy uses creativity and play to tap into the subconscious in ways that can feel safer for and easier to navigate. When we are creating or playing our body is relaxed and regulated, often making conversations about big topics easier to navigate.

Creativity and play are often regarded as the language of children, providing counselling sessions that speak a young person’s language can lead to deeper insights than those provided in traditional talk based therapy. Creative and Play Based Counselling can also be used to experiment and model life skills such as self regulation, social skills, and day to day tasks. Creative and play based counselling promotes positive, deeper connection with self, regulation, and social skills.

In adults, creating art and play can lead to deeper insights and understandings of the self as cognitive blocks are circumnavigated by creative or play based techniques. Creative and Play Based Counselling can release built up energy, provide stress relief, help model safe behaviours, assist with cognitive processing, and bring joy into counselling sessions. As adults we often forget to play, create, and have fun, bringing these elements into counselling can be a great benefit.

If you would like to know more about Creative and Play Based Counselling at The Affirming Place, please contact Em.
